Well equipped for HD playback devices: But what about high-definition TV broadcasts?
Like many manufacturers, Toshiba was taken by surprise by the short time taken to define the CI Plus encryption system in Europe. This left the Japanese company in the same unlucky situation as most of its competitors: The tuners in the current Toshiba TVs are, in principle, compatible with HDTV, but only if it's unencrypted.
In many European cable networks, even the standard-definition digital stations are encrypted. What you can receive will therefore depend on the country, network operator, and the individual channels themselves. For information on receiving HDTV in the United Kingdom, read our article First steps to HDTV.
Full CI Plus compatibility is likely to appear in Toshiba's TVs from 2010 onward - at the time of writing, the only current TVs available that support the system are from Philips, Loewe, Samsung, and Sony. We refer you to our overview of Toshiba LCD TVs for details of what each series can and cannot do.
