Swedish manufacturer presents HDTV based on Google’s Android OS

People of Lava, a manufacturer based near Gothenburg, Sweden, has announced the arrival of an internet-enabled multimedia TV based on the Android operation system.

April 6, 2010 — Internet on the TV takes a leap forward: A few weeks after Televisions.com reported on Google’s plans to introduce a Google HDTV, People of Lava, a Swedish TV manufacturer, has showcased a TV based on the Android operating system that will offer full internet access and support a variety of “apps”.

Known as “Scandinavia”, the new TV will offer a DVB-T tuner, three HDMI inputs, Full HD resolution, and LED backlighting, and comes in 42-, 47-, and 55-inch screen diagonals.

People of Lava’s “Scandinavia” HDTV even offers Google Maps — blurring the distinction between TV and PC.

But it’s the multimedia and internet capabilities that make this model stand out: With a built-in web browser, the TV will give users full access to the internet — something that few internet-enabled TVs have done so far.

And, since the TV runs on the same operating system as tens of thousands of mobile phones, there’s a huge market of apps — small pieces of software that perform specific functions, such as a memo pad or an emulator for old console games. A wireless keyboard and mouse come with the TV to allow comfortable operation from the living-room sofa.

Pricing and availability haven’t yet been announced for the UK market.
