Sky to add three extra channels to its HD line-up

by Televisions.com Germany on 03/12/2010
The British broadcaster Sky has announced the addition of three new channels to its HD package by summer 2010. Sky also declared an ambitious target of 50 HD channels by Christmas this year.

March 12, 2010 — A statement released today by the UK’s digital-satellite broadcaster Sky outlines the company’s plans to introduce new HD channels in the coming months. April 2 will see the arrival of ITV1 HD on the Sky platform, bringing sports broadcasts and entertainment programmes in HD quality. The sports coverage will include this year’s football World Cup, which begins in June. Later that month, on April 29, Sky will launch Sky Sports HD 4, which will deliver coverage of sporting events such as the Ryder Cup and The Ashes. Lastly, the American entertainment channel Hallmark Channel HD will begin broadcasting via Sky’s satellites on June 28. The addition of these three channels will bring Sky’s total to 40 HD channels — a number it hopes to push to 50 by the end of the year. Also announced for 2010, albeit with no specific start date, was Sky News HD, which the broadcaster claims will be Europe’s first HD news channel. The news comes as Sky prepares to begin broadcasting Europe’s first dedicated 3D channel next month.
