Samsung to launch 3D TVs in April

South Korean manufacturer Samsung plans to bring 3D TVs to the UK market in April this year, according to the Which? internet platform.

February 24, 2010 — A great deal of hype currently surrounds the arrival of 3D technology for the living room, but “When?” is the question on many people’s lips. A swathe of recent announcements promise 3D TVs, Blu-ray players, and films within the next few months, but few companies have published pricing or specific dates for availability.

Reviews platform Which?, however, has been behind the scenes at Samsung, where they learnt that the company will introduce 3D TVs in April this year. A 50-inch edge-lit LED-LCD was on display, along with a Blu-ray player and a few pairs of Samsung’s 3D shutter glasses. Features in the TV’s menu include 2D-3D conversion, allowing viewers to choose to watch any standard 2D content in simulated 3D, or to convert 3D content to 2D to allow viewers to watch it without 3D glasses.

Similar capabilities are expected to appear in Toshiba’s forthcoming CELL TVs, which the manufacturer announced at this year’s CES trade fair. In that announcement, however, Toshiba said its TVs will hit the European market in autumn 2010, significantly behind Samsung’s planned April release.
