According to a report by industry publication Digitimes, problems in the supply chain for light-guiding plates could cause an increase in the cost of edge-lit LED TVs, in which the plates play an essential role.

April 12, 2010 — Are LCD TVs with an LED backlight soon to be more expensive? A report by industry publication Digitimes suggests that this will indeed be the case: Apparently, there are problems in the supply chain for light-guiding plates, which are essential for building certain flat-panel TVs. The plates, which sit behind the TVs’ screens, are used to give a uniform light distribution from edge-mounted LED backlights. According to Digitimes, the manufacturers of the plates hadn’t expected the demand to be quite as enormous as it has now become: Almost all of the large TV manufacturers now use LED backlighting — and the numbers are rising.
