Newsflash: Study says 91 percent of HDTVs in the UK only view SD content

A recent study has found that the vast majority of people owning HDTVs in the UK are still getting their pictures in standard definition.

December 15, 2009 — Whatever the reason may be, it turns out that most people with an HDTV still aren’t watching in HD. So says a recent survey of 2,000 adults in the UK; the survey also found that many users fail to maximise the potential of a variety of high-tech devices in their homes. In the case of HDTV, we can see how this situation could arise. The only decent selection of high-definition TV content in the UK comes via BSkyB’s Sky+HD, a subscription service that currently costs a minimum of 35 GBP a month. The full Sky+HD package, which costs nearer 70 GBP a month, has a total of 37 HD channels; Freeview HD, on the other hand, which is currently rolling out region-by-region, will initially offer just two such channels — BBC HD and ITV HD. Blu-ray players for watching films in HD also represent an additional investment of at least 100 GBP, and require different cables in order to transmit the full HD resolution.
