Newsflash: Sony receives order for 3D broadcast vehicle from Sky

Reports today claim that Sony is building a 3D outdoor-broadcast van for British satellite broadcasting company BSkyB.

January 27, 2010 — Sony Europe’s professional division has today reportedly received an order from BSkyB for a 3D broadcasting van. One report claims the van will be ready in April this year, and Sky has previously announced plans to begin broadcasting a 3D TV channel in the UK in 2010. These are all positive signs for 3D fans: Taking delivery of a 3D broadcasting unit certainly suggests that Sky plans to record actual 3D content, possibly including sports events. Earlier this month, Sky announced that its 3D broadcasts will be compatible with planned 3D-ready TVs from LG, Panasonic, Samsung, and Sony. The current Sky+HD boxes, which are already installed in 1.6 million homes across the UK and Ireland, are already capable of receiving 3D broadcasts.
