Newsflash: Samsung is the latest to team up with RealD for 3D TV

In a joint statement, Samsung and RealD have announced the latest in a series of partnerships between RealD and TV manufacturers aiming to bring 3D TV technology to the living room.

January 5, 2010 — Samsung Electronics yesterday announced plans to incorporate RealD’s 3D technology into its 3D-ready HDTVs. RealD has been providing 3D technology to digital cinemas for years, and its format has appeared in films such as December’s 3D box-office hit “Avatar”. Sony and JVC recently announced similar collaborations with RealD, meaning that three of the world’s largest TV manufacturers are now supporting the company’s format. This brings the possibility of standardisation in the 3D market closer to becoming a reality. RealD’s 3D format multiplexes signals for the left and right eyes into a single channel, allowing existing HDTV infrastructure to transmit the signals. All viewers will need is a 3D-ready TV, and these are expected to become more widely available during 2010.
