A new degree at the UK’s Salford University will prepare students for a career in digital broadcasting. The degree course is expected to supply graduates to the BBC’s new base at Salford Quays.

February 1, 2010 — The University of Salford in north-west England has announced plans to run a bachelors degree in Digital Broadcast Technology. The university has developed certain aspects of the programme in collaboration with staff from the BBC, which decided in 2007 to relocate some of its departments to the MediaCity:UK development at Salford Quays. The course is based on an earlier course run by the university — the BSc in Audio, Video and Broadcast Technology — and will include the option for students to spend their third year working in the broadcast industry. Previous students have spent the year working at Sky, Carlton TV, Dolby, or Philips, for example. MediaCity:UK will provide 1,500 trainee posts every year, which graduates of the new course will be surely be eyeing up following the development’s planned completion in 2011. The new BBC base will take over responsibility for a number of the broadcaster’s departments, including sports and children’s TV.
