LG forecasts huge rise in 3D TV sales

by Televisions.com Germany on 12/15/2009

Following the release of its first 3D TV in August 2009, LG Electronics predicts annual sales to reach 3.4 million units in 2011. The company also plans to release further 3D-equipped displays in the coming year.

December 15, 2009 — A number of companies have announced plans to engage the 3D TV market in 2010. Among them is South Korean manufacturer LG Electronics, which today announced that it aims to sell 400,000 3D TVs in 2010, rising to a massive 3.4 million units in 2011. This follows earlier announcements that Japanese companies Sony and Panasonic also plan to incorporate 3D technology into consumer products in 2010.

LG Electronics’ headquarters in Seoul, South Korea. The company recently announced ambitious plans to dominate the 3D TV market.

LG released its first 3D TV in South Korea in August this year; at roughly the same time, Sony said it expects 3D Blu-ray players to be available by autumn 2010. Panasonic subsequently paraded a 50-inch, Full HD, 3D plasma at its recent 3D road show. But we’re still waiting for concrete announcements about living-room devices.

In any case, plans to film the upcoming World Cup 2010 partially in 3D mean demand is sure to rise steeply. The company also said that most events at the 2012 London Olympics will be aired in 3D. Of course, before such content can appear in the living room, broadcasters will have to introduce the necessary 3D technology to the consumer market — but manufacturers are clearly optimistic that this will happen. Market-research company DisplaySearch predicts global sales revenues for 3D TVs to reach 15.8bn USD (9.7bn GBP) by 2015, up from 1.14bn USD (0.7bn GBP) in 2010.
