Humax Freeview HD receivers bring access to Sky Player

by Matt Morgan on 04/14/2010

In addition to a range of other top features, Humax’s new HD-FOX T2 will be able to access Sky Player, BSkyB’s video-on-demand service. The HD set-top box wars are really hotting up.

April 14, 2010 — The battle lines are drawn: Recent announcements have pitted the BBC’s iPlayer against BSkyB’s Sky Player. But the battle won’t be fought via their traditional internet presences: The video-on-demand services are becoming increasingly available via TVs and set-top boxes. The arrival of Freeview HD tuners in this year’s new products seems to have coincided with a surge in support for streaming video.

According to the latest announcement, Humax’s HD-FOX T2 Freeview HD receiver will offer access to Sky Player; this follows similar news from 3view, another set-top box manufacturer, whose debut device will also be able to access Sky Player.

The Sky Player is already available via the internet (pictured), and is now beginning to appear in TVs and set-top boxes.

In the iPlayer camp, British TV manufacturer Cello recently said that the BBC technology would appear in its new TVs — but which will also offer Sky Player. So the two platforms seem to be going head to head, meaning you now need to consider content when you’re choosing a new TV or set-top box. Not only is there now a question of price, since BBC content is free, but there’s also a question of preferred content, since the BBC channels and those available via Sky carry vastly different programming.
