ViewSonic announces a new 3D projector

by Televisions.com Germany on 03/04/2010

A newly released projector from ViewSonic provides support for 3D video, but stops short of offering Full HD resolution. Still, at this price, the projector will allow the mass market to indulge its 3D curiosity.

March 4, 2010 — Shortly before the world’s major electronics companies unleash their flood of 3D technologies next month, some 3D products are already beginning to trickle through the dam. Acer, for example, recently announced a new 3D projector; now, the Taiwanese projector is joined by the ViewSonic PJD6531w, which offers support for high-definition 3D signals.

Available immediately in the US, the projector uses DLP technology and offers a resolution of 1,280 x 800 pixels. Although that’s short of Full HD (1,920 x 1,080 pixels), it still counts as “HD ready”, and should allow the projector to display 720p-format HD video with no scaling. The projector also claims to deliver 3,000 lumens of light output and a contrast ratio of 3,200:1.

ViewSonic’s sleek new PJD6531w accepts both 2D and 3D signals.

But it’s the 3D support that makes the device noteworthy: With support for NVIDIA 3D-Vision and a frame rate of 120 hertz, the PJD6531w is, the company’s statement says, “optimized for 2D and 3D performance”.

The statement makes no mention of polarisation, so we can safely assume that viewers will have to wear shutter glasses, and that the projector will simply display the images for the left and right eyes alternately. The 120-hertz refresh rate means each eye will see a frame rate of 60 hertz.

ViewSonic hasn’t yet announced pricing and availability for the UK market, but the PJD6531w will cost just 799 USD (530 GBP) in the US.
