Newsflash: Acer launches projector with 3D support
Acer has launched a new projector, the S5200, which will allow users to display 3D video signals. Although the device boasts DLP projection technology and an HDMI input, it lacks Full HD resolution.
February 16, 2010 — A new DLP projector from Taiwanese manufacturer Acer will offer support for 3D video signals, according to the trade magazine Display Monitor. Acer’s S5200, which is available now, claims to use a refresh rate of 120 hertz to produce 3D images for the left and right eyes on the same screen. This suggests that the S5200 will use alternating pictures (each running at 60 hertz) along with so-called “shutter glasses”. These electronic glasses alternately block off the left and right eyes in time with the video refresh rate so that each eye only sees the correct picture. At 649 GBP, however, the Acer isn’t exactly going to be high-end: The DLP chip produces a resolution of just 1,024 x 768 pixels, so you won’t be able to enjoy Full HD video. Acer has therefore pitched the device more towards business and education, but the inclusion of an HDMI input could give the device some appeal in the home-cinema market.
