Sony Announces Date for PS3 3D Firmware Update
Sony has announced the launch date for a firmware update that will bring 3D-gaming capabilities to the PS3. But there’s no word yet on when the console will gain support for 3D films on Blu-ray.
June 2, 2010 — Earlier this year, Televisions.com reported that Sony expects to release a 3D firmware update this summer to coincide with the arrival of its 3D Bravia TVs. The Japanese manufacturer has now specified June 10 as the arrival date in Japan for that update.
This will allow those who’ve invested in a 3D TV (not necessarily a Sony) and a pair of 3D glasses to enjoy games such as Wipeout HD and Superdust HD in 3D. A European and North American launch is expected to follow soon.

Soon to be 3D-capable: Sony’s PS3 Slim games console.
There’s been no word yet, however, on the arrival of an update that will bring support for 3D Blu-rays to the PS3. When it does finally emerge, this will allow viewers to watch 3D films on a 3D TV without having to go out and buy a 3D Blu-ray player.
It therefore carries a saving of a few hundred pounds for anyone who’s already got a PS3 — or, at least, anyone who’s got a PS3 Slim, since Sony hasn’t yet confirmed whether the update will also apply to the older (less-slim) models.
