According to the Blu-ray Disc Association, there’ll soon be two new types of Blu-ray Disc for professional and private use.
April 6, 2010 — The new BDXL (High Capacity Recordable and Rewritable Disc) is intended for professional recordings that use large amounts of data. The single-write version will come in 100- and 128-gigabyte capacities; the rewriteable version with a 100-gigabyte capacity. The discs’ three- to four-layer larger construction makes these larger storage capacities possible.
The Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA) is also considering releasing a version for private consumers, since the first Blu-ray Disc recorders are now reaching the market and will soon find their way into living rooms. In Japan such recorders are more widespread than in any other country, so the introduction is expected to begin there.
The second new type of disc announced by the BDA is the H-BD (Intra-Hybrid Disc), which will consist of two 25-gigabyte layers. This new type of disc will, according to the BDA, allow users to add their own data to prerecorded discs. But the BDA hasn’t said where these new discs will be used. Both of the new formats are of little significance for regular movie releases, since the existing 25- and 50-gigabyte capacities are easily sufficient for this purpose.
