Sony already announced weeks ago that the PlayStation 3 will soon support 3D video playback. Now, reports suggest that this might even be included in version 3.20 of the device’s firmware.
February 12, 2010 — Sony is expected to release a firmware update (version 3.20) for the PS3 in summer 2010; according to reports, this will bring 3D compatibility to the popular games console. John Koller, Sony’s director of hardware marketing, explained in an interview with the online portal Pocket-lint.com that the company is currently working on developing 3D video games to hit the market at the same time as Sony’s first 3D TVs — that is, in summer this year. According to Koller, a separate firmware update will introduce support for playback of 3D Blu-rays — but there has so far been no official announcement as to when this update will be available.

Into the third dimension: Sony’s PlayStation 3 (pictured here in the new Slim variety) could soon deliver three-dimensional video.
Whether 3D playback will only work with the recent Slim model, or also with the older, bulkier PS3, is still unknown. What is certain, however, is that you’ll also need a 3D-ready TV and the appropriate 3D glasses.
