Newsflash: Odeon cinemas to boycott “Alice in Wonderland”

The UK’s Odeon chain of cinemas has decided not to screen Tim Burton’s new “Alice in Wonderland” film in response to Disney’s plans for an earlier DVD release.

February 23, 2010 — The failure to resolve a row between Disney and the UK’s Odeon cinemas has meant Tim Burton’s new adaptation of “Alice in Wonderland” won’t be showing at the cinema chain, reports the BBC. Disney, the studio behind the film, has decided to shorten the period during which the film can only be viewed in cinemas from the standard 17 weeks to just 12. The Odeon fears this would lead the industry to take up 12 weeks as the new standard period and might ultimately hit cinema attendance figures, since the films would be available much sooner on DVD and Blu-ray. The film will run as normal at Cineworld and Vue, the two other cinema chains in the Odeon & UCI Cinemas Group.
