James Cameron: Avatar 3D Blu-ray “probably” in November
Avatar director James Cameron has spoken about plans for the film’s 3D Blu-ray release in an interview with MTV Rough Cut. An initial version is expected in autumn this year.
February 19, 2010 — Following the huge success of James Cameron’s 3D adventure “Avatar”, the director has revealed plans to release the film on 3D Blu-ray in November 2010. Referring to the forthcoming introduction of 3D TVs and 3D Blu-ray players by various manufacturers, Cameron explained: “By 3rd and 4th quarter of this year, you can get a 3D [TV] set if you want to ... and we’re going to put Avatar out probably in November, bare-bones, just the movie”. He goes on to say there’ll be a follow up special-edition 3D “later down the line”. Makers 20th Century Fox presumably hopes to capitalise on the arrival of 3D consumer devices by releasing “Avatar” in 3D — at least in some form — in time for Christmas. Earlier reports about the film’s 2D release quoted Cameron as saying the Blu-ray would arrive before the end of June. The 2D release is now expected in the US on April 22.
