Forgotten character to be revealed in new Blu-ray release of “Dumbo”
Drawings found recently at Walt Disney Studios show a character that was removed before the film "Dumbo" entered production. Check out the special-edition Blu-ray expected on March 22 to see more of the cartoonists’ sketches.
March 2, 2010 — The animated film “Dumbo” was first released in 1941 by Walt Disney Studios. Since then, however, one of its proposed characters has lain dormant in the Walt Disney Animation Research Library. Originally, the story saw the young elephant Dumbo visit an animal psychiatrist — an owl named Dr. I Hoot — in his quest to shake his image as the clown of the circus. The owl asks Dumbo what he’d like to become — a policeman, an actor, a sportsman perhaps; but when Dumbo replies that he wants to be able to fly, the doctor simply laughs and sends him on his way. Instead of the owl, the filmmakers ultimately chose to have Dumbo accompanied by a mouse, Timothy, who helps him gain the confidence to tap into his unusual ability.

Along with a range of other bonus features, the March 22 Blu-ray release of Dumbo will offer sketches of one of the film’s lost characters, Dr. I Hoot.
