“Avatar” is the fastest-selling Blu-ray ever
20th Century Fox has published figures showing that the home-video release of “Avatar”, on Blu-ray and DVD, has sold faster than any other release before it, with a massive 19.7 million discs flying off the shelves in just three weeks.
May 12, 2010 — The 3D adventure “Avatar”, from “Titanic” director James Cameron, was the world’s highest-grossing film ever at the box office. Now it continues that success with the 2D Blu-ray and DVD releases, which went on sale last month. According to a report from Reuters news agency, 19.7 million copies of the film have sold in just three weeks — more than any other film has ever sold in the same period. Its closest rival is “The Dark Knight”, the Batman sequel starring the late Heath Ledger, which sold a still-impressive 16 million units in the same period. A 3D release — on Blu-ray only — looks set for autumn this year, but it remains to be seen whether fans will already have got their fill of the film’s fantasy world, Pandora.
